The Lamb and the Cockatrice
A patchwork bestiary written and illustrated by Victor Rees
Child Be Strange (2026)
“Before the fields of snow, and before the valleys of rock and sand, the Cockatrice had lived in the dark…”
Raised in a cave by her father, the Cockatrice is warned she cannot leave until she is ready – since her eyes turn all animals and people to stone, and her feet leave a desert in her wake.
When she is suddenly left to fend for herself, the Cockatrice must come to terms with how lonely and hostile the world can be. That is until she makes a surprising new friend, who seems stranger and more wonderful than anything she could imagine.
